Richard holds the first and only Professorship in the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire.
However, his first job was as a professional magician and street performer before turning to the study of the psychology of self-help, luck, deception and paranormal belief.
He has published a number of books including: The Luck Factor (2003), Quirkology (2007), 59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot (2009), Night School: Wake up to the power of sleep (2014).
His research involves mass participation experiments in which over 2 million people have participated. His work has featured in TV programmes including Horizon, Equinox and World in Action and he regularly acts as a creative consultant. He has appeared on radio including Start the Week, Midweek and the Today programme for BBC Radio 4 and TV including the a panel game, Mind Games and People Watchers, which examines human behaviour. Richard was listed in the Independent On Sunday’s top 100 people who make Britain a better place to live.
He is a Member of the Inner Magic Circle, an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association, and a Fellow of the Rationalist Association.
