Robert Llewellyn is best known for his appearances as the battery powered mechanoid Kryten in Red Dwarf, or as a scruffy presenter of Channel 4’s Scrapheap Challenge. His other presenting roles include a version of Discovery Channel's How Do They Do It? and Hollywood Science, the latter being a joint production between the BBC and the Open University.
Formerly a petrol-head, he is now an advocate of electric cars. In 2011, he appeared on Celebrity Mastermind answering questions on the specialist subject of electric cars. In the last 4 years he has driven over 50,000 miles in electric cars powered by batteries.
He is a science and technology enthusiast, atheist and sceptic. He frequently talks at science, technology and sceptical events and actively promotes electric cars and renewable technologies.
He is also the author of ten books, including non-fiction Sold Out! How I Survived a Year of Not Shopping, and Therapy and How to Avoid It (with Nigel Planer), plus novels and the Protopian science fiction News From Trilogy.
In May 2015, it was announced that he would again be returning to Red Dwarf for series 11 and 12.
