As well as his regular work for the Scotsman newspaper and Scotland’s main political publication Holyrood Magazine, Darren has been published in the Daily Record, Sunday Mail, The Times, Guardian and the Observer. His best-selling 2017 book Poverty Safari: Understanding the Anger of Britain’s Underclass, blended memoir, journalism and polemic to make an argument that even the left – as well as Conservatives – misunderstand the complexity of poverty as it is experienced and that many traditional ideas on both the left and right are dangerously outdated. So outdated, that McGarvey argues communities may, in many cases, be better trying to address some of the problems themselves.
Since appearing on BBC Radio Four’s Start the Week in December 2017, McGarvey (also known by his performance alias Loki the Scottish Rapper) has come to wider public attention across the UK as an authentic and articulate voice on politics and social issues. In 2018, as well as performing and speaking all over Britain, McGarvey will present a live interpretation of his book Poverty Safari in a run of 24 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe.
